Our Story
"Cancer SurThrivor" was inspired by Christina Wilson's husband, Jim Petrick. He was diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer in the winter of 2021. As Jim's wife and caregiver, Stina knew that they both shared a sense of humor. So, to make him laugh, Stina gathered all the corny jokes she could find.
Jim jokingly referred to his cancer as "Mancer" but didn't want to exclude female patients, so the couple coined the term "CancHer."
What started as a few playful word combinations, like "Oropharyngeal cancer is tough to swallow.," "Cancer is an ass.," and "Lung cancer is breathtaking." soon turned into a decision to design and sell merchandise that would bring some light into the lives of those affected by cancer. They started Cancer SurThrivor hoping customers will benefit from the healing power of laughter and find support within the community of cancer patients.
The Story of How Our Community Started
Jim named his cancer "Bob." From this, his neighbors created a slogan, "Kick Bob's Ass," to support him in fighting his illness. The couple's neighbors rallied around them, mowing their lawn and even organizing a birthday parade for Jim to help him avoid potential exposure to COVID-19. During this time, Jim and Stina realized the incredible value of the community during Jim's treatment process. So, they want to bring that same sense of community with Cancer SurThrivor's website and social media platforms.
